Position: Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Investment Analyst for a financial advisory firm. Location: Boston, MA


The firm is a new, rapidly-growing SEC-registered investment adviser. It currently uses a quantitative portfolio management process to deliver independent investment management services to end-customers through institutional channels.


The firm specializes in advising and managing mass affluent retirement accounts acquired through these channels. It has developed a proprietary internet-platform for advice generation and delivery. The platform is currently being implemented for a large institutional client, and is being expanded to provide new functionality including more full-featured wealth management and retirement income management services.


The firm is expecting significant future growth. It is currently recruiting for two positions: a Chief Investment Officer and an Investment Analyst. The CIO will provide overall leadership for the investment function, and will work closely with the company’s team, as well as with clients and prospects.


The firm offers a fast-paced work environment with a substantial upside to the selected individuals as it grows its business.


Position Description: Chief Investment Officer


Responsibilities:

A. Key Functions:

  1. Overall leadership and ownership of the investment function, including development of all investment strategy and processes.

  2. Designing and implementing investment processes to create superior investment returns for clients.

  3. Management of the existing advice generation system and investment processes (currently mutual fund based), and their extension to include additional asset classes and investment vehicles including open architecture mutual funds, stocks, and ETF’s. Support the needs of future clients and the company’s business plan.

  4. Producing capital market expectations and corresponding model asset class allocations.

  5. Representation of the firm at meetings with institutional prospects and clients.

  6. Building an investment analyst team.


B. Other Responsibilities:

  1. Keeping the financial planning aspects of the system, including rules for defined contribution plans and IRAs, up to date.

  2. Maintenance, extension, and possible replacement of the current Monte Carlo simulation processes for estimating investment outcomes.

  3. Being the ultimate source of explanations of the advice system and investment processes within and outside the company.

  4. Producing white papers, thought pieces and other educational or sales and marketing pieces such as investment and market commentaries to communicate the firm’s process to sales prospects and clients.


Requirements:

The successful candidate will be a leader and a creative and highly motivated individual with a real passion for investing and building an investment function.

  1. 10+ years of experience in investment management with experience either in asset allocation.

  2. Strong and relevant academic credentials. Ideally, a Ph.D. in Computational Finance, Applied Economics or Finance. M.S. degree in Computational Finance, or CFA is required. CFP and MBA are desirable.

  3. Skilled at managing internal and external teams, and influencing them to achieve objectives.

  4. Familiarity with and experience in the use of risk models, quantitative portfolio management techniques, in particular, familiarity with different approaches to portfolio optimization and with commercial optimization software (Northfield ideally).

  5. Familiarity with the discipline of software engineering. Programming experience is not required but is desirable to facilitate communication with the company’s software development organization.

  6. Pension consulting and/or financial planning background is desirable, as is experience in the mutual fund industry.

  7. Teaching experience or experience in writing about investment topics is desirable though not required.

  8. Ability to take initiative in designing the advice system and investment processes and to undertake and complete projects with minimal supervision.

  9. Must be a team player, capable of interacting with institutional sales, product management, and software development to turn specifications into real products.

  10. Proven leadership skills. Excellent inter-personal skills. Entrepreneurial disposition.

Position Description: Investment Analyst


Responsibilities:

  1. Creating and maintaining investment processes to create superior investment returns for clients.

  2. Monitoring existing advice generation system for the reasonableness of its advice

  3. Maintenance and of model asset class allocations.

  4. Adaptation of the existing advice generation system and investment processes to the needs of future clients.

  5. Representation of the firm at meetings with institutional prospects and clients.

  6. Keeping parameters of the financial planning aspects of the system (such as IRA and plan contribution limits) up to date.

  7. Writing explanatory text for end-users of the system for publication on the Web site and on paper.

  8. Producing commentary and newsletters for institutional clients and individual customers.

  9. Producing performance reports as needed including attribution analysis.

  10. Providing backup information and analysis for the software development, product management, sales and marketing, and customer support staff.

  11. A real interest in investing.


Requirements:

The successful candidate will be a disciplined, creative and highly analytical individual with a real passion for investing.

  1. 5-10 years of experience in investment management.

  2. Strong and relevant academic credentials. Ideally an M.S. degree in Computational Finance, or CFA is required. CFP and MBA are desirable.

  3. Familiarity with and experience in the use investment analytic software, risk models, optimization software (Northfield ideally), quantitative portfolio concepts, and quantitative equity valuation models, and proficiency with MS Excel.

  4. Recent experience as an assistant portfolio manager or equivalent.

  5. Pension consulting and/or financial planning background desirable, as is experience in the mutual fund industry.

  6. Must be a team player, able to explain investment concepts to software engineers.

  7. C++, C#, .Net, experience will be excellent though is not necessary.
